Significant Overhaul in Georgia’s Migration Legislation

You can now listen to this article ⬇️

Georgia’s migration legislation has undergone a transformation with the enactment of Decree No. 291, which became effective on September 1, 2023. Spearheaded by the Government of Georgia, this change aims to streamline the employment of immigrants in the country.

Here are the key takeaways:

  • Employer Responsibilities: Local employers are now mandated to register labor immigrants in a unified database maintained by the Ministry of Labour, Health, and Social Protection. This needs to be done within 30 days following the signing of an employment contract.
  • Contract Changes: If there are any terminations or extensions in the employment contract, the employer is required to update this data in the database accordingly.
  • New Online Platform: A dedicated website, labourmigration.moh.gov.ge, has been established for the electronic uploading of all relevant data, including employment contracts.
  • Compliance Guidelines: Employers have to provide a list of mandatory information while registering the immigrant workers. Failure to comply will subject the employers to scrutiny from the Labour Inspectorate.

This initiative brings forth a structured approach to managing immigrant labor and holds employers accountable for the data they provide, ushering in a new era of transparency and governance in Georgia’s labor market.
